Medical Matters

Illness in School

If your child becomes ill, or has an accident in school, we will ring you on your contact number(s) as soon as possible.  Please notify us immediately of any changes to your contact information.

Illness at Home

If your child is ill, please ring us to notify the class teacher of his/her absence by 9.30 a.m. on the first day of absence and on each subsequent day.  On their return to school, please send in a note to confirm the reason for the absence.

If your child is sick or has diarrhoea during the night, please keep him/her at home for 48 hours from the last episode of sickness or diarrhoea.

Medicine in School

We will administer prescribed medicines (but not creams/lotions and ear and eye preparations) if they are part of a course of treatment.

A Medicine Form (available from the school office) must be completed.

  • Medicine must be delivered to school by an adult and given to a member of the school office personnel.
  • The medicine must be in its original container that clearly details the date it was prescribed, the child’s name and the dosage.
  • At the end of the school day, the medicine must be collected from the school office by an adult.

Please note that medicines requested to be given “before lunch” will be administered at 12.00 noon.  Medicines requested to be given “after lunch” will be administered at 1.15 p.m.

Asthma Sufferers

Please complete a School Medication Form for inhalers that may then be kept in school.

Epipens

Staff receive annual training in the administering of Epipens.  If your child needs an Epipen in school please contact the school secretary for details.  Please ensure that we have up to date information regarding contact numbers if your child has an Epipen in school.  Please check regularly that the Epipen is not out of date.

Head Lice/Thread Worm

We have information leaflets available on the identification and treatment of head lice and thread worms.  Please notify us if your child contracts head lice or thread worms in order for us to advise other parents to be on the look out and help to prevent their spread.

Medical Policy

We have a school policy for children with identified individual medical needs.  If your child has an identified medical need please discuss these with us before they start school.  We can then devise an individual healthcare plan for your child’s needs in school.

School Health Service

A school nurse will contact you by letter when your child is in Reception.  You will be asked to complete a medical questionnaire that may be followed by a health interview with the school nurse.

The school nurse will test your child’s sight and hearing together with his/her height and weight.
